I personally use a combination. I have read that skinks need overhead lamps, and that undertank heaters are also helpful. I have two basking lamps over a long flat rock, and then I have an undertank heater in another part of the cage. I think he prefers the lights over the rock, but the undertank heater prevents the night temps from dropping too low.
