SAN FRAN GARTERS

Can these snakes be legally kept in the US if they are cb? I see that many EURO breeders have them. Is there anyone in this country legally working with them? I have always wanted to keep this spp.

Who hasn't wanted to work with them!! Very beautiful snakes! However, they are not allowed, even captive born. I emailed a breeder once and he said they won't even think about shiping them over, they could get in trouble for sending them here.
Hopefully, in the future they will allow some of us breeders to work with them to help repopulate the species in the wild before they become extinct!

thanks for the info, guys! I love those snakes, and if we could legally import some cb ( as sad as that sounds, being they're our native snakes), I'd like to be in on it so we can make it easier on our wallets and try to produce some nice baby san fran's.

I still see that as highly unlikely. They do not allow captive ones because it isn't always easy to discriminate between WC and CB. Therefore, it is easier just to make it illegal to have both which totally ends the problem. They are beautiful snakes, but I would rather afford them the extra protection in hopes that they can someday re-establish their numbers naturally.

by building an airport and highways through the natural range of these garters. Then, they tell us we can't work with them. One needs to consider this as well, most of the Euro stock is inbred and mixed w/ different garter ssp. So, there's no chance of keeping SF garters legally in this country.

Hi,

As you may well have gathered SF garters are not legal in the US,they are however legal in the EU, i have kept and breed them for many years, yes there has been a inbreeding depresion, however the European population seems to be heading out of this, they are straight forward to breed, let us hope that in time you will be able to legaly keep & breed them in the US,it will come.
