Does anyone have pics of Albino Bullfrogs?

Lyn Feb 29, 2004 08:44 AM

I am considering buying a young Albino Bullfrog. I could only find one picture of a very nice large yellow adult in the photo gallery. The young one I'm looking at is pure white. Will he turn yellow as he gets bigger? Are there any good or bad points I should know about in considering this new frog? I see info on African Bullfrogs, but at the pet store they said the frog is the same kind found in our area (around Buffalo NY) so it's not an African one. I'm going to do some more research but unless I find out something negative I'll likely pick him up in another week or two. I'll post pics if I get him in case anyone would be interested. He's a little bigger than a quarter. They also have Albino Bullfrog Tadpoles, I was thinking that would be fun to watch one develop!

How much is he? Unless he is outrageously priced, I would buy him if I were you. I have never seen a white albino, only yellow. Thay would be a neat frog to have. Post pics if you can when you can. thanks

He is $35. Are the yellow ones even yellow as babies? So maybe the white one will grow up to stay white? That would be neat. Although I think the yellow is pretty too so it's a no lose situation! I do several presentations per year with my animals, he'll make for a neat demo animal when he grows up I think.

I am no expert on Albino bullfrogs but every pic I have seen, even of juvies or babies, has shown them to be all yellow. I would think that he would stay white, normally frogs lose there bright colors as they grow, but this ones already plain white so I dont think it would change. If I were you , I would buy that frog as soon as possible because it may be gone in a week or two if you have any reptile enthusiast around, or even someone who just thinks it cute. If I found a frog as unique as you say this one is, I would snatch it up in a second. Again post pics if you do indeed buy it because I am interested in seeing this frog. thanks

Thanks for the encouragement. I originally wasn't worried to leave him there, he's been there for a while now so I figured nobody was interested. Now I'm very worried he'll disapear. I'll try to get there tomorrow if at all possible. If not, I'll pick him up Tuesday. I have a digi camera and will happily post pics. He is definitely white. If he's yellow it's a very very pale yellow. I'll set up his enclosure tonight in case I can get out there tomorrow. I emailed the guy who's working there tomorrow and told him I wanted the frog, so I know he won't encourage anyone else to buy him at least. I might call the owner and ask him to be held just for my piece of mind getting through work tomorrow. Can't hurt. I really didn't think he was any different than other albinos, I figured they were all white at that age.

Although there is a couple of African Bullfrogs the one most imported is the Pixie.
Yours is an native species so totally different.
I myself have seen only yellow (mot a typical frog owner) but if it's pure white as you say it may maintain that color it could change later in it's life.
There is nothing negative about an albino bullfrog. The only difference bing color.
I would how-ever make sure to give it shade due to albinism and light.
By the way where did you see the tadpoles would be interested in seeing what they look like..

Oh, I never thought of the lighting! I have a UTH on the tank and was going to use a heat lamp too, maybe I'll get him a ceramic heater instead. The lights from the other enclosures in the room will be enough that he can see ok but not glaring in his eyes. He has huge red eyes.

I didn't get to actually see the tadpoles. The pet shop had bred them and the tadpoles were upstairs in their breeding area, off limits to customers unfortunately. I didn't ask how much one would be. I have no idea how to keep a tadpole but am considering getting one if I can find out how to care for it. I would love to take regular photos of it during developement from tadpole to adult frog and have a page on my website devoted to it. Obviously it would be a work in progress for many years though LOL.

I'm going to try to set up the enclosure tonight and maybe try to pick up the frog on Tuesday. Now that I've decided to get it, I'm very concerned someone else might take it if I wait too long. It is staying in the water bowl at the store so I'm concerned about keeping the water clean. I have Reptisafe and will change it daily if he's pooping in it. I'm hoping he'll come out of the bowl for that though. Is it normal for baby bullfrogs to stay in the water alot? They have driftwood in the bowl so he can hide under it, or use it to climb out.

This is Trevor, my White's. No worries, I've no plans to keep them together.

This is Toadie, I found him in my backyard last summer while mowing the lawn. The neighborhood kids played with him till I was done then we released him back in an area I don't mow.
