Overeating

spangles Feb 29, 2004 11:39 AM

Is it possible for an Iguana to over eat? I have an Iguana who loves to eat; he eats in his cage and is always eating out of our hands. Is it ok for me to feed him out of my hand as much as he is willing to eat (I love feeding him from my hand!) or should I be watching how much I let him eat. He is still a baby and growing rapidly, so that might be part of why he is always hungry.

I am not sure if it is possible to over feed an iguana. I don't think so. My iggys are piggys. They eat anything. As long as your iggy eats out of the dish and doesn't get dependent on you hand feeding him it shouldn't be a problem. I hand feed my iggs every time I check on them. In the morning I hand feed them and then hold the plate of food up to them and let them eat until they are done. Then I put their plate in it's spot and they eat out of it the rest of the day. I think they are happier when they're eating.

As long as the iguana has ample room to move around and get exercise, and has the right basking temps, you shouldn't have to worry. It is perfectly fine to feed him from your hands. Just might get spoiled and not want to eat from a dish later on. No seriously, the only downfall to that is the ig will associate your hands with food which may lead to some handling problems later on.
