My friends turtles laid eggs and he said they laid them in the water I knew they where dead when he told me but was wondering if its the yolk that dies when to much water gets to it?

The shell provides a permeable interface for gas exchange (oxygen & carbon dioxide). Some small volume of water **may** enter through the shell but primarily, the water cuts off gas exchange and suffocates the zygote (fusion of oocyte & sperm) [the yolk is a food source during development of the zygote/embryo/fetus].
