Feeding Problems

blue_tegu Feb 29, 2004 02:44 PM

Amika has always eaten a combination of meat (mice, tuna, wysong canned meats) and fruit (grapes, banana, kiwi, mango, plum, strawberries) but lately she has been refusing to eat anything except for mice. She used to be really good about eating all sorts of things, some days I would even only give her fruit because I didn't want to overdue the mice. But now, if I put a plate of fruit in, she won't touch anything, even if she's hungry. I've even put mice on top of fruit, so that the smell would rub off, but she still only eats the mice. Is somthing wrong or is she just spoiled and picky? I don't want to keep her on a diet that consists solely of mice, I know that's not healthy. Any ideas?

You could try mixing the fruits with scrambled eggs to see if your tegu will eat them. Don't freak out about the fruit thing though. Tegus can be the very pickiest eaters sometimes. I have a Tegu that will not eat fruit, never has eaten any fruit. He's perfectly healthy on his diet of mice and crickets/superworms and eggs, and deer meat. I freaked about this problem at first until numerous vet visits afterward proved that he is just fine without the fruit. I know everyone stresses the fruit issue, but in my experience they do not NEED fruit to grow and be healthy. As long as their diet is supplemented and balanced. I also supplement all food with Miner-All from Sticky Tongue Farms.
