Leo's weight

lostkauze Feb 29, 2004 03:05 PM

I know I've posted this before... twice. And I'm posting it again, to see if I get different reponces, so don't get mad.

I just weighed all my leos. Everyone is around 2 years old.
My girl's weights are (in grams) 46, 40, 39, 42 and my male is 47. I don't know why are are so light. If healthy breeding size is 60 g, why are mine like 15 grams less than that? They all eat alot, and are very healthy. I got the 5 from 4 different local breeders. I just can't figure out why everyone is small. I will acknowledge however that one girl is a bit short, and one has leg problems, but the other 2 and the male are in perfect shape.

Opinions?

Michael

Hi

What do you feed them and in what quantity's?, do you always dust the food you feed and keep a cap of calcium in there tank 24/7?. Just asking because I don't now you.

I feed them mealies and occasionally waxworms and pinkies. I dust every feeding and leaving calcium in 24/7. I dont hand feed, well i do, butI don't single out each leo everynight and feed them one by one. I put some mealworms (enough so that there are some left in the morning) in a petri like dish and when its empty or almost, i put more mealies in. Like and all you can eat buffet that comes to you. When I supplement with waxworms or pinkies I single out the leos. I feed crickets too, but I'm not too fond of them so its not that common. I do everything that is in my power to provide the best care for my leos, and I know when something is wrong with them. If they seem troubled, I seperate the bullied one. I baby them so much, I'm like a grandma to a baby. I just find it strange that they are so small.

Hi

Another good health food source for them would be some silk worms. My geckos go battie over them and they are second in nutrition to crickets.

Don't worry about the 60g weight, because your geckos can a lot smaller then the one that weighed 60g. Mine weigh in the 40s. The only thing you should worry about is the tail size. If the tail is nice and fat then there weight is good. Keep feeding them what you are now, that good. Just feed a couple of pinkies w/ calcium after the lay eggs. And actually what would be a good idea is to put a lil lid of calcium in the cage. Then when the gecko needs it it will lick it out of the lid instead of eating the sand. Good luck!

Hi

Were any of your females bred to early? That can stunt their growth. One of my girls was bred too early and she has stayed in the 40 gram range while her sisters are around 60 grams. I don't know if males are affected by this too, but they might be.

I just started breeding them this year. My first egg ever was laid on January 2nd of this year.

lostkauze Feb 29, 2004 04:13 PM

And the tails are nice and fat.

MattP Feb 29, 2004 04:31 PM

They are probably fine then since they are breeding, laying eggs, and have fat tails. When did they stop growing and were they well taken care of in their first year?

lostkauze Feb 29, 2004 05:18 PM

Yeah, i've cared for all of them for the two years.

It seems to me that they stop growing and then bulk out during their second year.
