Someone posted a question about underbites a while ago. Since my B&W has this problem, and I periodically take him in for a check-up for it, I thought I'd post about his latest vet visit today. As I said in an earlier post, TegTeg has had an underbite on the right side of his mouth since he was about four months old. The vet has never found any infection there, but since he was rubbing it this morning, I took him in just to make sure everything was okay. Though he's usually a brat at the vet's, my little guy settled right down today and let we three females (me, the vet, and an assistant) gently swab his face and jaw. He was so relaxed, I think he must have thought he was on a visit to a lizard spa! We noticed that some of his facial scales had some built-up shed right below the jaw that seemed to be moist underneath. There didn't appear to be any infection, but we speculated that he might have gotten water and bits of food caught under the retained scales, and that might be what's irritating his jaw right now and causing him to rub. There wasn't more than a layer or two of shed built-up, so this certainly isn't the underlying cause of his jutting jaw. The vet feels it is probably just a deformity.
