Common Ringneck food?

HerpHelmz Feb 29, 2004 05:42 PM

***Only answer if at one time you kept Southern Ringneck Snakes(D.p.punctatus)in captivity***

For anyone who had Southern Ringnecks in captivity or did scientific reports or taxonomy reports on them. Where they are native, what are their main prey items?

I am in NY so mine are Northern Ringnecks
earthworms and smaller salamanders(northern duskies and 2 lined). Theoretically they will take soft bodied bugs and baby snakes. I have had the best luck with worms.
Any and all ringnecks I or my kids have kept eat earthworms.
One of the forums addresses them....can't think which without the list in front of me.

Yeah I know what Northerns eat, they are the only ringneck SSP that I have experience with. Well now I have a Southern. The reason I posted was because I was wondering if treefrogs is in the diet of Southerns, I know many people will say they eat small frogs, my Southern is give or take 15 inches long and it ate a 3 inch green tree frog. This snake has an incredible varied diet, so far I have had it eat goldfish, guppies, rosy reds, worms and a tree frog and I haven't even had it for a month. It's owner before me kept it on a diet of anoles.

P.S. Sonya- Saying ringnecks eat baby snakes is incorrect, they eat snakes, you shouldn't say only baby snakes. I had an adult Northern back in August that ate Common(Eastern)Garter Snakes of similar size.

I probably should have said 'smaller' snakes.
I don't know if your Southern is a fluke or the norm. Heck, I had a black ratsnake that refused anything but live fish in a bowl and rarely a frog. Individuals.

Even saying smaller snakes is a stretch. There have been many cases of ringnecks being used as feeder food for kingsnakes, the owner leaves them alone since the ringneck is smaller, comes back and there is just one fat ringneck. It happens.

Been a long time but I used to feed mine earthworms and small Anoles. There are plenty of them here in Florida. They get about 12-18" max. HTH!
