Species Mixing?

okay16 Feb 29, 2004 06:03 PM

Possible to keep monitor species together?

ie. Savannahs with Ackies, Ionides with Savannahs, Ackies with Ionides, ect.

The same size of course.

Thanks, just curious. Haven't done anything yet so don't go crazy =P

hey there,

some people mix their species with no ill effects, others choose not to. I for one do not mix species together, but like I said, others have done so with no problems. The main thing to understand is that ackies reach an adult size that is 1/10 the size in mass compared to a blackthroat/whitethroat. As the whitethroat grows bigger and bigger, his cagemate begins to look more and more appetizing. It's your call, but be careful, I would make sure you remove them when they begin to differ in size.

Something to think about ackies are small monitors, Ionides are large monitors that naturally eat lizards and have been found with bosc monitors in their stomachs when they live in the same places. If they are the same sizes it can be safer but they still have their own personalities, they may or may not. Its best to intro any monitors as hatchlings. Its up to you but be prepared for possibilities of death or severe injury and always have an extra cage ready right away.
