about how big does a red tail need to be to eat a small rabbit?

rule of thumb,... once the thickes part of its body is as wide as the rabbit.

A 3-4 footer can eat eat a baby rabbit. Bigger snakes can eat bigger rabbits.

Circle the rabbit's rib cage with your hand(s) to get an estimate of the size. Do the same with the snake at midbody. If the two are about the same, the snake can eat the rabbit.
