Help needed, i feel so bad!!!!!!!!!!!!

RedQuake Feb 29, 2004 10:29 PM

When last i got my mealworm order, i split it in half and began feeding one and put the other in the fridge (to prevent them from pupating into beetles). Well it turns out that moisture collected in the containers (they had holes) and the top section molded.........i lost about 90% of the worms!!!!!!!!! I'm so upset!!!!!! I was able to save some, ones that weren't black. I put them all into a new container with fresh bedding and today i checked to see which were moving and which were dead......I've gone through them again, only keeping the ones that really squirmed when picked up with the tweezers.

What i'm afraid of is that they could have that bacteria from the mold and might be bad to feed.......actually i'm so scared so i won't feed them, but does anyone think its ok to keep them for breeding? There were also aliens in the container.

I know i know, i have been soooooooooo stupid! I'll be heading down to Petsmart tomorrow to pick up some fresh mealworms....i've almost used up the first batch, and on Friday i'll put in a new order from the breeder.... For now i'm just so mad at myself.

Thanks for any advice....

It's pretty sad when people think of me when it comes to bugs and mold! LOL!!! But then again, I do have a lot of first-hand experience on that subject! You know, there are so many kinds of bugs and mold it would make our heads spin!

Mycotoxins/aflatoxins such as Aspergillus flavus are produced when sub-human grade grains (corn and soy, to name a few) are allowed to get wet and moldy. When the feeder insects eat the moldy grain, they can carry large amounts of these toxins in their bodies with no problems. It is when they are chronically eaten by the geckos that it poses a serious health. I honestly can't say what kind of mold is produced when feeder insects die and become moldy.

Just like the other posts on this thread, I would simply toss out the bad ones and get some that are fresh.

Don’t feel too bad, this is one of those live and learn things. I know I’ve had a couple of batches of incest’s die, because I was trying something new.
You shouldn’t even consider feeding them to your geckos, just toss them out and start over fresh. Even the aliens might bring a large number of mold spores to your beetle bin.

Ok that sounds good to me.......i already have enough beetles ya'd think i had a ton of worms, but the little suckers are still breeding hehehe.....hopefully i'll little baby worms soon......(((i'm so pathetic looking forward to baby worms, since i'm not looking forward to baby geckos LOL)))

I'm almost at the point of being depressed......this was just another thing to add to my *what else can go wrong this week* list.

Thanks for the kind words.......

It’s ok to look forward to baby meal worms Red, and I’m sure one day you’ll have your own leo eggs to care for. But until then you can be impatient with me and wait for these little guys to hatch, I’ll be sure to get pictures for you all when they pop out.

Here are 2 pictures of my blizzard parents:

And their eggs

And last blue eye’s eggs, one has been denting:

Keep your fingers crossed for these little girls.
