How to determine sex?

crtoon83 Mar 01, 2004 01:52 AM

How do you determine the sex of RES turtles? I have 2..same age. I got them at about an inch or so..(shell length)...now one's close to 3 inches one is about 5-6. Whats with the size difference? could this be male/female difference? How do I know for sure..(besides lifting their shell and seeing...lol)

They all grow at different rates. Mine are both males but one grew much faster and is still bigger than the other one. Males have a long tail and very long nails. Females have short nails and a short stubby tail. Here is a pic of my boy, you can see how long his nails are. He is about 4 inches long.

If they arent big enough to tell by claws, you can use this method which may not be 100% accurate but can give you a pretty good idea. Now this does involve peeking underneath. Look at the position of the cloacal opening on the tail. Males generally are farther away from the shell than females.
