Rabies and Chams

lele Mar 01, 2004 09:31 AM

In safo's thread below he said the vet told him his cham needed a rabies shot (at some point). Is this only a concern with wc? is it needed if they are cb? This is the first i have heard this mentioned (I think). I looked in my books and online and found no info...could someone comment on this? thanks!

rabies is a viral disease of **mammals**; chameleons and other reptiles do not need vaccination against rabies

most likely the vet's hospital had a computer system that automatically generated a reminder for a rabies vaccination if no vaccine history is on record. probably in this case the species of the pet in the computer was unspecified, or the vaccination reminder might have been meant for a different pet owned by same owner

It is impossible for any reptile to be infected with rabies.

I agree with the last post...or that the vet is uneducated about reptiles.

Haha, that's rediculous. Funny. Either the vet was uninformed or trying to squeeze money out of someone.

Cats and dogs are the norm so i would suspect what ever you bring in your receipt will say that..

having never seen it discussed here nor able to find it in any of my herp books or online I figured there was an error. And i also wondered HOW they would contract it, but I figured I would check with the experts!
