Hand Feeding

dragonfliz79 Mar 01, 2004 09:56 AM

I'm new at this.
I was wondering how do you start hand feed your Uro?
Mine usually eats when I'm not arround. I've only had him/her for a few weeks, it's still a baby.
So do you only offer food when your there?
Will they bite you by mistake?

Any Suggestions would help!!!!

Thanks!!

I wouldn't worry about getting bitten. My Mali is very careful (cautious?) when he approaches my hand. Once he gets eating, I don't think he cares what's holding the grub. :D

If yours is a little skittish, I would hold the food still right in front of his face. Hopefully, he'll learn that you're not a predator and will actually look forward to your presence (food supplier).

So when you hand feed a Uro you are only feeding him. You are not leaving food in the cage to eat during the day? Or you do both? I'm a little confused . . . . .

Thanks for the help!!

you leave the salad and other green mix that you prepare in his cage all day, but when you hand feed you offer something thats not in the dish, like a wax worm or a mealworm, superworm, flower, dandelion flower, whatever....then eventually he will understand that you mean food and then you can feed him his salad mix by hand and he'll most of the time eat some. but still keep feeding him in his dish too.

be careful not to overfeed them on the insects though. only do like 3 insects a week.

I've been bitten on purpose by my male (I was trying to assess some impact damage on his lip from crashing into the wall). If you do get bitten, it's not that big of a deal - they do have very powerful jaws and pointy little teeth, but as long as you don't jerk away from them, it's no big deal. A good pinch is all, really. Didn't even break the skin.

I hand feed dandelion flowers in nice weather - they're very delicate when taking those. The rest of their food I leave in the cage, since I'm gone most of the day.

I exclusively hand feed every day. You wanna guess how quickly they tamed up? lol! If I leave the food in there, they just fling it everywhere/walki in it/throw sand on it.
