urgent info needed for cf baby water

blackthroat1 Mar 01, 2004 12:21 PM

hi there i stay in the uk and have recently aquired a baby water monitor , hes not exactly pro exotics quality but has good a good appetite and is definetely not shy, he has been showing bubbling saliva signs with a kind of snotty nose every now and then and i fear it may be a repsiratory infection , i keep and feed him exact to the pro exotics care sheet to the word, and am wandering if you robyn at pro exotics has ever had a similar case or knows what to do or anybody, all i can really do is keep his temps up , oh hes been wormed by a vet recently with 3 different worming fluids so am not sure if this maybe an aftermathof this, any helps or previos experiences would be much appreciated

why was he treated? did he have parasites?

Does he buble always or only after eating, or after being in the water? I ask this cause if fed f/t and you thaw in water the excess water bubbles up out the nose sometimes.

But if he is doing this all the time then, first off keep the temps up thats imperative. Then you may also want to revist the vet and have it checked out.

Good luck with the little fella.

ive noticed it 3 times in the 3 weeks ive had him , hes done it twice after eating his crickets and once with his nose running after i bathed him , i got him wormed incase he had any parasites as he is a captive farmed one
thanks for your help

yeah probly a good idea to deworm it. I think Pro exotics treats theres too since they are captive farmed as well.

But you will probly have to see a vet to determin what the cause is of it's nose bubbling. Other then that change water often, and keep the temps up.

Good luck with him, waters are awesome.

Just a question... What type of substrate is he on? The bedding looks like wood chunks and really the only wood chunks I've seen that are red like that.. are Cedar... If I'm wrong.. thats well and good but if it is Cedar.. thats very very bad.

yeah the substrate i dont think is cedar but it was bought for it holds the moisture well it is fully treated for reptiles and is made for reptiles , but it could be the problem, it does have a unique smell to it, i wish id never thrown out the bags it came in now lol, thanks for you guys help any other info or opinions would be appreciated

Adjust the basking site so it is not at an angle. A flat surface will allow them to spawl out and make the most of the time basking. The idea is to evenly heat the body not the top of the head.

I also wouldn't have the light right above the water.

what are the details of your setup, and more importantly, what are the temps, and how do you take them?

hi all, ill be taking some pictures shortly of his setup but he is now in a different enclosure to the one in the photo as it was just in there for 2 weeks away from my other animals as i try and stay clear from captive farmed animals, although hes small he is in a 3 by 2 by 2 vivarium with a large flat rock under his basking bulb , robyn i tried the retes stacks but he seems to prefer the rock , probably cos it heats up better , his baskin temp is 135-138 degrees F and 80-90 around the cage with some of the shaded areas reaching 76-80 but those areas are like underneath cork bark tubes and hollows, i used a zoo med 160w powersun bulb for heat and light and allow the cage to cool at night it doesnt drop below 80 at night with the shaded areas still being 76-80 at night , i have 2 min max digi thermometers in his cage with sensors , im afraid i dont have a place in scotland that stoks the temp guns so these are the best i can get, he is bathed for an hour every two nights in a large rubbermaid box with a heatpad underneath to keep the water warm as he had a lot of old skin on his tail which has only now came off, he has so many hides which are mainly cork and a big tree branch close to the baskin spot for him to lie along ,im using a reptile bedding forest bark which holds the moisture well but has to be soaked and sprayed every day to keep the humidity constant which is hard with the extreme temps, i feed him on large black crickets and locusts 6 days a week and a small fuzzy mouse (defrost) on the seventh day these crickets and hoppers are well fead on cricket diet and veg for wo days before feeding , and the livefoods are dusted daily with t-rex's bone aid, ive tried superworms and wax worms but he doesnt pay any attention to them , but feeds on the crix, hoppers and mouse with extreme enthusiasm, im currently building a colony of feeder roaches for him, i will post some pics of his full enclosure to let you guys see it, as ive said ive only seen the bubbling nose and blobs of saliva on his face about 4 times in the 3 weeks or so ive had him but would rather get a second opinion than let it go unnoticed, but also when he opens his mouth he sometimes has lots of saliva in there if mainly seen him doing these after bathing in his shoulder height water. sorry its a big post but am just trying to give an exact idea of his cage, thanks keith
