Feeding in an open-style cage.

all4sky Mar 01, 2004 12:26 PM

I was wondering what the best way of feeding chams in an open type enclosure (like an indoor tree in the middle of the room). Is there a method without letting too many crickets escape? Thanks

You will either need to hand feed them or use a feeding bin. By bin, I mean a plastic storage box that will keep all but the most jumpy crix from escaping. You can put the box somewhere the cham can climb down to shoot from the rim, or hang it in the tree.

You can also try a feeding cup. We use Glad reusable platic containers found at Walmart or Grocery stores. Its basically a small plastic container. Once you get the crickets in it, its difficult, but not impossible, for them to jump out. Place the cup at the base of the tree, and the chameleon should climb down to it.

To keep the crickets from escaping the cup or container, remove their hind
legs. They can't jump out of the cup this way.

I've had great success with this type of feeder:

Having the screen attached to the side of the feeder like this can be better as some chams don't like to climb downwards to hunt (security issue) and some have a hard time grasping the idea of feeding out of a cup. I've even gone so far as to coat the inside with bugstop and I can put lobster roaches in there and they won't get out.
