PLEASE HELP!

elpescadorli Mar 01, 2004 01:07 PM

my juv bt has been making vomiting motions latly and just succeded in vomiting / coughing up a large amount of what looks like spit. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? prior he would make what sounded like a sneez. it had only a couple bubles in it right by his mouth. otherwise it looked like what might come out of our mouths when we forget our manners. temps have been above 80 almost always.

Please help, he is my first bt and all was great until a couple days ago.

he has been doing this for like 15 min. during this he has been shaking his head violently while his mouth is open on occation. he is doing this all out in the open. he is also staying in the basking area.

once again, HELP!

I have never had a monitor do what you are describing. I would certainly be contacting your vet. You said your temps were above 80. I would make sure they are above 90 with basking areas around 130. If he is too cold he can not digest his food.

i do breed collareds, and i find that if there too cool then they will "vomit" after violently shaking there heads, although there is no bubbles. What your describing does sound like a cold reptile but only a vet-check will confirm if its ill,or cold.

it could be many things, from to cold, ate something it shouldn't of, parasites, etc.

I would say checkthe cage temps, make sure there is a varient do not just say the whole cage is 80 so it is fine. It can be as low as the 60's on one side as long as the other end goes up to the 80's to low 90's, with a basking area of 130 .

But again see a vet just incase.

Good Luck

Probably the most horrid smell you would experience. I had some BTs that were imported that were doing great at one time, after a while they started to puke food and worms up, they were deworming themselves I guess as they had just got up to weight at the time from being dehydrated, starving imports before that point. If you keep the monitor correctly (able to go underground top cool off and conserve moisture, able to fluctuate from room temps to 86 f ambient or a bit above, and able to bask at 130-160 f surface temps) it will stop puking because it can digest properly and not worry about the undigested food poisoning it. Also if kept properly they can rid themselves of most all internal parasites. If kept improperly they cannot, nor can they survive any deworming meds which are poisons and rough on them.

I had an abandan animal (timor monitor) came into work duing just what you describe when we took him to the vet it turned out to be a severe case of mnemonia. I would have him looked at immediately. Monitors usually will not resort to "vomining" their mucas until there are feeling horible. What happens is that the mucas in the lungs build up and they can't breathe so as an insicnt the try to force it out. Raise your temps and seek vetrinary care. If you happen to have any baitril around give him a dose until you get there. Good Luck.
