Big eyed treefrog

Buddy25 Mar 01, 2004 02:55 PM

Hello all,
My local exotics petstore carries big eyed treefrogs. Does anyone keep them, have experience with them, etc? As well, do they have any other names I should know, to study if I plan to take the plunge in the care of one of these lil guys?

Thanks a billion,
Steven

Big eyes treefrog is a common name for a variety of old world "tree frogs." I have seen them called Peacock Treefrogs. The one I had and that is pictured here was Leptopelis flavomaculatus. I kept him in a well planted tank with humity or 60-80% and temps in the 70s to low 80s never going below 70. They can be quite hardy frogs.

I own a pair of big eyes and they are great. They are active and very hardy. I unknowingly put them in with a pair of bubbling tree frogs which I now know was a mistake however they all seem to live quite wellbut NEVER mix frog species. I have mine in a typical tree frog setup with temps between 70-80 and a slight drop at night. I mist it twice a day. They are pretty active so they will need a pretty tall tank and they eat alot about 12 small crickets every other day.
Hope this helps you.

Thank-you for your help Christine,
WOW, 12 crickets every other day, lol?!?

Also, do you know the approximate length a big eyes treefrog reaches, aswell with the lifespan, and tank size?

Thanks for your time,

Actually the 12 crickets are for a pair of them sorry for the confusion. If you get them young I am sure they will eat less and then you can increase the number of crickets or even the size. Mine are currently getting 1/4 b/c I buy them by the box but they can probably eat 1/2 and get about 3-4 each.
I have had mine for about 8 months now and are about 2-21/2 inches. I have the 4 frogs together in a 30 gallon tall which is the equivelent of 2 10's on top of each other. I think if you decide to get a pair you can probably get away with a 20 high, they do need the height and they will hang out on the glass. As for their lifespan I honestly don't know but I am assuming that with the proper care they can live a pretty good length of time. They are definately great frogs to get especially if you are looking for something different then the norm. Hope this helps
