Breeding Rats

devilish1182 Mar 01, 2004 04:09 PM

I'm currently spending about $30 a week at the local petstore for rats for my burm and 2 red tails. Would it be easier and cheaper for me just to breed my own rats and if so can anyone currently breeding their own rats give me some advice on it. I have a set up I can use to keep the rats in and would have them in my garage because its not cold outside anymore where I live. How long is the gestation period of the mom and after they are born would I have to seperate them from the male rat? Does anybody know of any good websites? Thanks for any advice in advance.

I breed my own rats. Keep the cool and well fed with plenty of fresh water. It is a good idea to seperate the male so the female can rest. The gestation period is around 28 days. Here is a pic of a rack my buddy built using my plans. You can build them out of 1x4's.

I breed my own rats. Get like one male and four females. In about two weeks you will have baby rats coming out of your @$$! After that, it takes about 2.5-3 weeks until you can seperate the babies from the mother. Let me know if it works out for you.

I breed my own rats, too. I started out with a couple ten gallon tanks, 1.4 in each. They've expanded to three ten gallon tanks and four fifteen gallon long tanks. I've got 20 snakes I feed rats to, from yearling sand boas who eat rat pinks, to corn snakes who eat juvies, to my red tailed boas who eat several adults at a time. I still have to sell off 30-60 rats a month to the local reptile store. DON'T but commercial pet store rodent food if you're gonna raise a number of rats. It's too expensive. My personal mix is 1 ten lb bag wild bird seed, 1 ten lb bag wild bird sunflower seeds, 1 ten lb bag squirrel food (corn, peanuts, and sunflower seeds), 1 eight lb bag generic dry dog food, 1 eight lb bag parrot food. Sometimes I'll add a bag of unsalted popcorn (they love that.) There are simpler and cheaper ways to go, but until they're fed to the snakes, they're pets. They also get the stems from the greens when I make my iguana food. Just make sure you keep them fed and watered, because if not, they will kill and each other. Good luck.
