any reason to worry about a second clutch of all slugs?- - more

kingofrain21 Jun 10, 2003 11:24 AM

my female ghost laid a big awesome clutch of 20 perfect eggs april 17th (imagine my current impatience) - - but she was pretty thin afterwards and for that reason i did not want her to double clutch - - well she stopped eating again, and i figured she was building up eggs again - - well today i find a clutch of slugs in the nest box i had stuck back in there, all slugs.... this doesn't bother me at all, and i'm thinking that because they are so small and yellow and infertile they take far less of a toll on her body than laying fertile eggs.... is this true? is there anything negative about this situation? (keep in mind i didn't want a second clutch)

Actually the unfertlized eggs don't really take any less out of them, what is there is there. It is an advantage to the female to not breed them for the second clutch ONLY if she ends up absorbing the eggs instead of laying them. She should be ok, just remember next year that she is the type that is going to lay them no matter what so you might as well pump her full of food as much as possible and breed her again so at least all that energy goes to some use. Some are just the type that absorb and some are the type that will dump the eggs, so now you know what you got you can be more prepared for it next year.
