Substrate ? Not like one further down.

Jasonmc Mar 01, 2004 06:11 PM

I tried to find some info on a good substrate for my leopard gecko. He is a big guy who deserves a happy life. I plan to put him in a small vision cage which should be more than enough with lots of rocks to climb on.

I read the page below on substrate and my head started spining. Without starting any argument or constructive critisizing, what is a good substrate?

I do lots of snake breeding and this is my first lizard. I would like to introduce femles this summer, but for now I'll just work with him.

I cooled him on sani-chips after he started refusing food, and he's now warming back up. I dont know if sanichips are bad or good? I would imagine they would be very dangerous if he ate them, but he has'nt from what ive seen. He eats super worms out of a bowl, not from the groud.

I don't know what more to say about him but he is a cool guy.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Jason

Then who the heck is bblackmon19? He/she is the obvious troll, but the previous posts got deleted. When you posted that you were the troll, and I saw new postings by bblackmon19, I assumed you were posting under 2 account names.

BYW, it would be very easy for KS to check the IP addresses of both accounts.

lol I've seen a lot of people recommend sand, even though I don't use it, but bark chips???
I don't think I've read a single caresheet (good or bad) that recommends bark chips.

ive kept leos for 3.5years now from babies to adults. even got 3 4 of them from a petco. i use calci sand. thats all ive ever used. there happy, they love it cause they can dig, and dispite what every one has said about it causing impaction, well it hasnt happned to me(knock on wood). if i were you i would go with calci sand. but DEFF do NOT use the bark chips. that is like automatic impaction. lol. so again id say use calci sand.

I do use calci sand too, but only for my leos that I'm not breeding and that are in a cage by themselves. The advantage to paper towels is that it is easier to clean up, especially when many geckos occupate one enclosure

every one talks about how much easyer it is. but my prob with that is well what about what the geckos wants? i mean if ur geckos are happy then cool, but honestly i think they mite b happier on sand. understand what i mean? and its good to c that im not alone on everything i do.lol

If your concerned about sand you can use tile. I've had it about a week now and my gecko loves it. The ceramic seems to hold the heat for him and it also provides a natural looking setting. Just a suggestion.
