in the winter the lights should be on for about 8 hours. in the spring it should be 10 hours, and in the summer it should be 12 hours.

There's absolutely no problem having it on for 14 hours either. Especially in the summer. I believe most people actually follow the "14 on, 10 off"-schedule, a lot of people even keep that schedule all year, without any problems. At least from what I've read and heard.
