A how to question about mealworms and providing moisture without the bedding molding

RedQuake Mar 01, 2004 07:39 PM

Ok well i lost all of my mealworms that i had in the fridge which boggles my mind cause i've done it before with NO trouble but anyways........

How do you put potatoes, carrots etc into the mealworm container without the bedding becoming moldy??? I leave the thing in overnight and by morning the bedding around the potatoe is all icky (for lack of a better word LOL). I've tried to put them onto a lid of a small jar but the worms just didn't figure out it was there.....

So how does everyone else do this? The temp in the room is nice and toasty, could it be to warm? Personally i hate being cold so i've cranked the heat

Thanks a million
Red
P.S. I've got the veggies on a lid for my beetles and they've figured it out great LOL

Well, when I was using straight "Gut Load" from ESU I never had that problem. Of course I get that stuff dirt cheap because I work at the store. On my new superworms I got the standard bran and junk I was told to make bedding with and I'm having the same issue. It's like have oatmeal on top and flakes on the bottom, and it stinks to high heaven.

I'm using carrot slices for moisture.

iv always just used cricket gutload. it has more vitamins the just patatos adn carrots. some ppl dont agree with my methods of feeding and what not but like i said that just what i do. its the easist way. all i do is take the substrate out of the containor and put the gut load into it. it acts as the substrait and also gutloads them.
hope that helps

No, there really is something about the gutload. It doesn't soak up water. I guess because baby food is made to be mixed with moisture it just soaks it up until its gross. The Gutload doesn't do that, and I think I'm just going to switch back to using Gutload and Miner-All. Not much help for Red, but I think its easier too.

Yes, it is made by ESU, or the trade name Coral Life. It comes in a black box with green lizards and stuff on it.

Jeff

I think it has like bits of corn and other junk.

Almost identical stuff, but that is Flukers version of the Gutload.

I keep my mealworms in a box's worth of Wheat Bran - the kind that comes in a box for about $1.70 at the grocery store. I keep them in a huge tub, where they end up pupating and breeding. They eat the potatoes and carrots. But I've never seen any mold, although I had expected them to at first!
