Do you mean bonsai, as in small trees? If so, they're just as harmful (or not) as the full-size version of the tree...

Ok, here we go... There are many different types of bonsai trees, the term bonsai refers to the technique used to miniturize the tree. That said I would not use any of the pine (most commonly seen), I have used ficus in my dart frog tanks and I have even seen a baby green tree in a vivarium at Amazon Reptile Center that was coiled over a wind-swept style ficus (beautiful sight).
