Speaking of Cold . . .

php Mar 01, 2004 09:25 PM

Last Friday (2/27) it was 43 F. air temp here in Eastern St. Tammany Parish Louisiana at 8:30 a.m. Yet by the corner of my garage, out of the wind but on a patch of dark earth in the early morning rays, my wife spotted a T. sauritus sauritus soaking up the sun. He (?) has been there each morning since, except today when it was cloudy. I think our little friend winters next to our garage slab.

When I was in Northern California a few years ago looking for Garter snakes I noticed that they would come out in the mornings after the sun had been up for a little while and the fog had cleared. This was on the coast near Eureka. The wind was blowing inland from the ocean. I was Wearing jeans and a sweatshirt which was hardly enough to keep me comfortable on that 50 degree morning. I found that even with the wind blowing and the air temps being as cool as they were, the ground was very warm. The snakes that would bask would also have sound cover from the wind in the folliage growing on the ground.
