Crested12 Mar 01, 2004 09:47 PM

Hey i'm writing my paper on Retics and i was wondering how long the teeth of an adult could reach? THat would be great if anyone knew of a website because i would need a source to document this.( I've been looking for a long time) THanks for the help. _Ben Hoksch

I haven't measured my snake's teeth in a long time, but I did about 20 years ago. There are a few variables that play a role in how long the teeth are in a particular individual snake. Like I can't say that "a 16 foot retic would have 1/2 inch teeth" because quite simply age plays a bigger role in determining the tooth size than does body length. The reason for this, quite simply, is that a much older snake of the same length would have a much larger head and thus much larger teeth than a younger snake of the same length. Say a retic reaches 16 feet in 3 years,.. it's teeth would likely be at least half as long as a 20 year old, 16 foot snake.

Brian Ott (rowotter) would likely be able to give you more acurate answers as he is much more studious than I am and he works in a collegiate atmosphere, studying these snakes in a more scientific capacity. But I can guess at it in a general way. I would not be surprised if an older, 25 foot retic might have teeth exceeding 1".

A friend of mine has a skull from an approx. 20 footer. I talked with him last night and he measured the longer teeth at about 15 to 16 mm or about five-eights of an inch. He doesn't know the age however.

They're pretty impressive.

from my Sulawesi and big yellowhead female they measure anywhere from 10mm - 13mm, they are due to dump out the pigs I fed them in about a week I will watch and take an exact measurement then if you want. They are both in excess of 19ft.
Now I dont know which of the teeth I find are anterior and posterior. The ones in front are larger then those farther back in the jaw. As far as how large they can get I dont know, I would reason that the 33ft record holders teeth were close to 20mm(approx 3/4" at the front of the jaw.

Here's a picture of a tooth from one of my retics. This tooth came from an almost 15' male retic of unknown age. I'm sure he is less than 4 years old. I found this tooth while feeding him a rabbit. As he was swallowing the rabbit, I was able to take out the loose tooth. It was toward the front of his mouth, but I'm not sure if it originated from the front.
