how and when do you candle eggs?

dragonlady1954 Jun 10, 2003 11:55 AM

I am in a panic! I thought you were supposed to pick up an egg and put a flash light next to it to see blood vessels etc. I have 2 clutches of eggs in the incubator. The first is almost 3 weeks. I tried to candle the egg but I didn't have a penlight and I didn't know what I was looking for. Anyway I read on a website today that you should NEVER pick up the eggs and you should NEVER put them right next to the flashlight. I did both to about 3 of my eggs. Did I probably ruin them?? What is the proper way to candle the eggs and what am I looking for?? Thanks

You should be able to see them grow. Please do not touch or move the eggs 24 hours after they are layed. Best bet is not touching them at all. If they are fertle they will stay firm and grow. If they are bad they will turn yellow or green and will have a bad smell. Once I put them in the incubator that is where they stay.

I left mine in the containers and placed a penlight at an angle that shown in the egg. I've also read that the light can startle them or something, IMO, it's a bunch of hooey. They'd have to have heart attacks or something from fright for that to be the case. People have been candling eggs for yrs and they hatch anyway.
It's best not to handle them just to be safe, but I wouldn't worry too awful much. I've read of someone dumping the whole hovabator and all the eggs went rolling, they all hatched too.
