feeding habits for new dragon?

antares Mar 01, 2004 10:03 PM

I just got a bearded dragon a few days ago, he's about 6 inches long and past the fragile hatchling stage. When he came home he ate pretty well but barely has since. Do bearded's not eat that often? Or is it just because he's nervous? I'm worried because I'm afraid this might go on and he'll become sick. It's only been two days that he hasn't eaten but I still want to be sure about what's going on. We usually offer a few dusted crickets/waxworms, alfalfa, and a few other greeens. Any advice on this or feeding in general would be greatly appreciated.

Beardies that age/size usually eat like pigs. Especially crickets. The little guy may just be stressed because of the new environment, and he'll hopefully start to eat again very soon. If he does, be sure to provide a lot of properly sized crickets (no bigger than the space between the beardies' eyes), and feed him at least twice a day, with as many as he'll eat in a 10 minute period.

If he doesn't start to eat again pretty soon, he has to see a vet, in my opinion. They can go downhill very fast at this age.

It's probably just adjusting to it's new environment. If it doesn't start to feed soon do the babyfood trick - mix some powdered repcal pellet with some babyfood, sprinkle with supplement, and add just enough pedialite so you can suck it up into a syrenge. Put a drop on the nose and they will usually lick it off, if not pry open the lip with the tip of the syrenge and put a drop in the mouth so they get a taste. They will usually lap it right up.
