substrate

lizzylizard Mar 01, 2004 10:28 PM

I'm switching from calsi-sand because of all the bad things you hear about impaction. I was just wondering what a good substrate (besides sand) is. The guy at the pet store said bark, but I would think that would be to harsh on my leopards belly. Any info would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

if you want something that they cannot ingest use the green or blue reptile turf from your local pet store. Personally I use fine sterilized play sand, leopards live on the stuff and eat in nature off it. I have had leos for 9 years with no problem, but, if you are worried, get the turf.

I've been using sand for four years with no problem as well, but the vet gave me a guilt trip on it. I just bought some astofurf stuff, hopfully she likes it. Have you ever heard of leopard geckos getting some sort of impaction from hair. I have two giant dogs and it's shedding season. I change the sand often, but it's impossible to keep the hair out.

Hey there. I just changed substrate too. I'm using 6 inch tile squares now. They fit into most size tanks and even if they don't fit from wall to wall you can fill in the cracks and edges with play sand. It comes in all kinds of colors and it smooth and natural looking. My gecko loves it.

Yeah sure. I got mine at home depot. Its a sandstone color but with flecks of sparkle stuff. not too realistic but very cool.
