Breeding Questions

Kojiroh_1 Mar 02, 2004 02:10 AM

Hi,

I have had my male argentine Black and White tegu for 5 years now and I have decided I'd like to breed him next year. I have a few questions.

1) I was reading the hybrid page at bluetegu.com and it said that one of his females laid eggs at 9 months! is this common? ( I was planning on buying a 36+inch female and waiting at least a full year to attempt breeding, but if 9 months is possible I will just save myself some money and by a 16inch and still wait at least a year)

2) is it possible to breed Blue X Argentine B&W, or Argentine B&W X Red?

Here's a pic of my big boy! (eating a large rat)

Has he been hibernating every year? I remember Bert saying that if they don't hibernate every winter, then they will not breed. I don't know first hand, but you may want to double check before you shell out the cash!

I did not hibernate him the first year, but I have every year since. I am pretty sure he is able to breed, I took him to the vet when he came out of hibernation (yearly check up) and my vet said he was producing semen.

Can anyone answer my questions?

Thanks

The hybrid tegus are smaller than BW tegus. Blue tegus can reach adult size in 9 months which is why they can breed so young.

Thanks for the info. I am thinking I should just spend the money and buy a near breeding size female.

Thanks

The pair of Argentines that produced the 39 eggs that I posted about below have never completely hibernated since I've had them. They slow down considerably in the winter here in Michigan but have always been awake weekly...never sleeping for more than a few days at a time. Our Blues that produced last year laid their eggs in December, after only being together for 2 months. The male had not been hibernated the previous winter.
