Changes to Ra's tank, coming soon... : )

sunfox Mar 02, 2004 07:06 AM

His substrate needs a change quite badly so I plan on buying some more sand (the ground is still frozen solid) and mixing it with some potting soil to give it a different feel. I'm going to put more substrate in than I did before. This extra stuff will allow Ra to kick substrate around as he sees fit. I will cover the front open end of the bottom stair of his basking spot with soil to give him that "safe den" feeling. He never goes in from the front, always from the hole on the top (he doesn't use the other holes much at all) like he's entering a den. Also, that's his new spot to sleep. The next thing I'm going to do is build an arficial den (for now) with some plastic tubing and some kind of tupperware container which I will bury under the soil. With more substrate added, some of the rock hides will be mostly buried so Ra will be able to dig out another hide for himself. The last big change will be getting him a bigger tank. I'm on the verge of getting a new job that pays very well and if I get it, I will get a custom-made tank for Ra. I'll post some pics as I make the changes and update you all on his behaviour (less glass dancing I hope).

Making your own tank is generally cheaper, good luck!

I can't build worth a damn. My fiance is the one who built Ra's basking spot, I thought up the design but even he doesn't have the ability or knowledge to build a uro tank. I can get a custom tank for MUCH cheaper than any pet or aquarium store I've been to. These people sell their wares at the Reptile Expo and take orders for custom tanks. Picking it up at the Expo saves on shipping costs.

i wouldn't suggest building one. i would say stick with your idea of just getting the custom cage.

sounds like it'll be much easier for you. either way i'm sure RA will be happy.
