Why do geckos need a bowl of calcium in their cage?

wolfcharmer Mar 02, 2004 11:17 AM

I have only seen this recommended for species of geckos. Do they need more calcium than other lizards? Should bearded dragons also have a bowl of calcium available?
It sounds odd to me that they would just eat it out of the bowl. Is dusting crickets not enough?

Hi

Yes, you would still dust crickets with calcium that has D3 in it along with the other vitamins they need, but you should also keep a cap of straight calcium (no D3 or vit.) in there tank 24/7 and that way as they need extra calcium they will go up and lick the calcium powder and be able to get the extra they may need at anytime they want.

As for other reptiles, someone else would have to answer as geckos are all I have.

Take Care, TLB

p.s. - It only makes sence though that all reptiles need calcium.

It's not really all that odd that they would lick the calcium powder (straight calc with no D3 added, can't stress that enough), when they do so it means they're needing more than they're getting from their diet. I'm not sure why geckos need it, but all I know is that if you want a gecko with a healthy bone system you'd better make sure they never run out...
I'd suggest going to the bearded dragon board and asking if they need a calc dish, I've never actually even seen one of the buggers, let along cared for them.
