Possibly gravid Hypo Sonoran...she is pretty large. pics

gofer Jun 10, 2003 12:44 PM

Well, I am 99.9% sure she is gravid, you may or may not be able to tell from these pics just how round she is. I took them late last night and the lighting was horrible...but they will have to do for now, lol. Thanks again Jason for this female, she is just getting bigger and bigger.

Have a good one,

Gregg F.

I would think she would stop eating soon. Super looking clutch. That's what I'm talking about. LOL. Sonorans are one of the best pits for great looking morphs. The other one being the bullsnake. IMHO.

I tried to feed her. I'll be throwing in a small mouse tonight to see if she's interested. She was in blue a while ago, but has not shed yet. So i'm expecting that any day now. I believe she is gravid, but won't know for sure until i get a nice surprise in the egg box, lol.

Have a good one Terry, and good luck with those Climac eggs.

If you think she's gravid, you should probably stop handling her. Are you sure that's a hypo?

gofer Jun 11, 2003 01:01 PM

Well, I actually handle most of my gravid snakes because of some egg-binding that occured with a corn last year and what helped to pass the eggs. I don't think they should be held very often or for long periods, but i also think they are usually lathargic from not getting enough exercise and therefore causing egg-binding. Plus they keep going to the bathroom and therefore need removed to clean the cages. That is usually when i take pics, when cleaning. I like handling all of the snakes, including gravid ones to give them a little exercise and hoping it helps at egg-laying time. Gravid snakes int the wild are forced to move, whether it's climbing or at ground level. Careful and infrequent handling has seemed very helpful with all my gravid snakes.
She has pretty much no black on her, some dark brown, and came from Jason at ENVY, so i'm pretty sure she is a hypo. Plust the babies she threw were very light and bright colored.

That makes a lot of sence Gofer. That definately looks Hypo to me, she is a beauty. What morph is male that knocked her up..lol

Hypos, Albino's (Hybino's?), Blizzards and Ghosts. She was bred to an Albino last year, and i had one Blizzard, 4 hypos and 3 albinos hatch out, no ghosts. But i'm hoping tihs year's clutch, if she is kind enough to lay one, will produce some Ghosts. Or at least one for me to keep, lol. If i get a clutch i'll be sure to post pics before they are put in the incubator.
As for handling gravid females, I can see where it would be bad if they are handled to often and get stressed, or handled roughly. But I think keeping them a little more active and not lethargic (spelled it wrong yesterday, hahaha) is a better route. There are a lot of people who use this method, and a lot who disagree and still do not handle them at all. But in order to clean the cages, they must be moved somewhat.
Thanks again for the great comments, and have a good day.

Best of luck with her, I hope you get some of each morph so you can post more nice pics for us. Take care.

I'll post pics of the babies if/when i get some. She just shed today, so hopefully i'll have pics of eggs in two weeks or less.

Have a good weekend,

Gregg F.
