adult male acting funny...

Schwan Mar 02, 2004 02:06 PM

about a month ago i was in the middle of moving and my mom was watching my herp collection for me and she called me up all freaking out because a male leo's foot was injured and had been bleeding but the bleeding had stopped by then. he was in a ten gallon tank with a female and the last time she had seen him was the previous day when she fed them a bunch of mealworms. well, there wasn't much i could do since i was about 5 hours away and i told that the female probably thought that his toes were mealworms and to keep her eye on him but not to worry too much. so i got back up there about a week later and checked him and it seems at though a couple of his toes were bitten off. they were all still scabbed over.

well, he's been acting funny ever since. mom told me about it on the phone right from the beginning. he suddenly likes to lay himself sideways between his basking rock and the glass of the aquarium, and sometimes he walks like he's dragging his male junk on the floor of the cage.

my collection has all been moved now (except for my two adult beardies and their 180 gal cage...mom still has them,) and only yesterday was i able to finally separate his female roommate from him, and i hope he's going to get better now, but does anybody know what might be going on?

i have soaked him in some warm water a couple of times to try to soften the scab and help him shed around his injured toes...is there anything else i might be able to do for him?

i can post a picture of his foot if it would help...

any help and i would be grateful...

Hi

Is his foot swollen? and can he walk on it normally?.

well, his foot actually isn't swollen...he's just missing a couple of toes and there are big ol' scabs on em. but now i am starting to get a little worried because his other hind foot seems to be getting some kind of irritation on his long toe. and this is after i separated him from his cagemate.

yikes!

i should be able to post some pics tomorrow...

Hi

If not already, get him on a papertowel substrate. Get some betaidine and dilute it a little bit and apply it to those area's everyday and maybe twice a day.

What you want to watch out for is infection and if you notice any signs of that you will need to get him to a vet. to get some antibiotics to head off infection.

his male junk on the floor’ , I got a chuckle out of that one. That is very common with adult males, this is how they sent their territory. Now if his male junk is outside of his body, and he is dragging that on the floor, you have a big problem, requiring vet assistance, but that’s not the impression I got from reading your post.

As for the wound, this is just a guess but he could have injured himself during a bad shed, or like you said a cage mate could have mistaken him for a mealie. Either way, put a dab of antibiotic ointment on the injured area until it is healed. Keep his substrate extra clean, humid hide misted, and temperatures close to 90 and your little guy should heal up soon. Best of luck!

hehehe...

...no he has not got a prolapse...i know all about those since it cost me $300 to get the left one of my rankins dragon's hemipenes amputated--poor little fella...bet all you guys out there aren't laughing now =)...

i'll try the antibiotic ointment. i think i read before that iodine works better because it can't sit there on their skin so they can lick it off. thanks for your info...

the best thing you could do for him would be to take him to a herp vet.
