heat gradient question

eliotstone Mar 02, 2004 03:21 PM

Dear all:

I have my boa constrictor set up in a cage with a small heat pad underneath and a heat lamp set above the same spot. The basking spot is aproximately 100 degrees, but on the opposite end of the enclosure the air temp is about 78. Is this an acceptable gradient or should it be toned down some? The enclosure is a 50 qt sterilite.

Everything that I have seen says 90 to 95 in the basking spot with an ambiant air temp of 82 to 90 and no lower than about 78 at night. 100 might be to much.

100 is way too high. Red tail boas are tropical to sub tropical snakes and dont require a high baking temp. In my cage the basking temp is aroung 85-87 and has worked well for 3 years.
