GOT MY FIRST LEOPARD GECKO!!!!

hjk Mar 02, 2004 05:43 PM

I just bought my first leopard gecko today. It's pretty much an adult and female. What substrates does everyone use? I'm currently using paper towels. What type of heat does everyone use? Is undertank or light better? Do they need extra heat at night? When I get a chance to take pics I will post some. I want to let him settle in first.

Hi

Congratulations! on getting your first gecko. BUT!, be warned here and now, they are very, very addictive (grin) and I garantee you will one day have another one. (grin).

Let me ask you one question real quick, what supplies do you currently have already on hand for the tank.

Take Care, TLB

I am already thinking about getting her a boyfriend and maybe breeding (small scale). Right now I have a hide, water dish, food dish, red light (40W), and a heating pad (human style w/ 3 temp adjustments...currently on low). The heating pad is under half the tank and on all the time. The heat light is on a timer to be on for 12 hrs a day. The light just shines on about 1/4 to 1/2 of the cage. I am using paper towels as substrate right now, thinking about using washed play sand (this is what I use for my juv. beardie and adult mali uro). Thanks.

Hi

The warm end needs to be kept between 88 to 90 degrees, so you will need an inexspensive temperature gauge that you will put on the inside of the warm end, about l inch up from the base.

You will also need a humid hide in the tank 24/7, I put a papertowel in it and keep it moist not soaking wet all the time. This really helps a gecko to shed when it is time.

You will need to keep a cap of straight calcium powder in a cap in the tank 24/7 that doesn't have D3 in it or anything else. You will also need to dust the crickets with calcium with D3 in it everytime before feeding the gecko. Why the cap of calcium in the tank also, that is so when the gecko needs extra calcium for there bones it can lick it as needed.

You can use the human heat pad if it keeps the warm end warm enough and it should be set on low. If it doesn't keep the righ temp., then you will need to switch to an under the tank heat source. They need that bellie warmth to be able to digest there food properly.

Sand, Calci sand and other kinds of sand is the worst thing you can use for a gecko, because there is a chance they can become impacted. They get the sand in there mouths when diving for there food. Newspapers and papertowels are the best substrate source. You could also use slate, reptile carpet or tile. If a gecko gets impacted and can't no one can get it cleared out, then a gecko can die from it.

Take Care, TLB

p.s. sorry this is so long. Feel free to ask anymore questions.

Hey,

If the heat pad keeps the warm end warm enough then I dont need the heat light? Do they need UVB? If I keep using the paper towels will it cause a problem with the crickets hiding under them and the leo not being able to get them? How often and how much should I feed her? Should I just feed live crickets, or can I use the zoo-med leo food? Or both? I will look and find something to make a moist hide out of tomorrow morning. Thanks for all the help.
