Ants in Leuc Tank

geckguy Mar 02, 2004 07:00 PM

My leucs were getting a bit hefty so I decided to cut down on food alittle, and they didn't seem to lose any weight at all after a month and a half, then one day I saw the male snacking on some ants, so I looked around the cage a found a small ant colony in a bromeliad, it looks like there is a few hundred ants, but only a few come out at a time, they are 1-2 mm long and black in color with no large mandibles. My question is should I remove the ant colony or leave it in as a backup food source for them?

Man tough question. This is what I WOULD DO, but not necessarily what YOU SHOULD DO. I would leave them in there and keep a CLOSE eye on the Leucs. If the colony gets to big they are going to need more food themselves. Ants can take a frog over in a matter of seconds so in doing this it could wind up being fatal for the Luecs. On the other hand they seem like they are not causing a problem yet and it is a nice food supply for your frogs. In conclusion , if you do leave them in the tank I would monitor the colony very close to see if they are venturing out in numbers that could be harmful to the Luecs. Just my .02

I will leave them in there and monitor the frogs, they seem to love the ants alot, there are usually never more than 10 ants out wandering around the cage, if the frogs see them they are gone in a matter or seconds!
