something is wrong with my aft

alieliza Mar 02, 2004 07:38 PM

I posted this on the gecko forum, but im sure i would get a quicker response from you guys...

My african fat tail gekco has not eaten for what is quickly becoming two months. He has food available at all times. I have offered him meal worms, wax worms and crickets. He has eaten maybe one or two crickets and possibly a wax worm.
I took him to the vet a week ago today, he gave him a b vitamin injection (to stimulate appetite) a de-wormer (just in case) and some food via syringe. He said that he looked otherwise healthy and if i dont see an improvement in a few weeks to bring him back.
He has gotten a bit skinnier, and has indeed lost fatness in his tail. He weighs 43 grams at the moment. He is about a year old and has been in my care for the last eight months or so with never a problem until recently.
He lays under his paper towels all day.
He gets a soak a couple times a week to be sure that he is hydrated.
His temps are between 80 and 90 during the day. Night light 24 hours and undertank heater, with a slight drop in temp at night. Humid hide, regular hide, heat gradient, etc.
I really dont know what is wrong and it is starting to really worry me, especially because the vet didnt come up with much during our last visit.
sorry so long
any advice appreciated

How are his stools?I'm assuming he has hides on both ends.Did you bring a fecal to the vet?(I relize thats prolly hard though because he is barely eating)The dewormer might make him go to the bathroom try and bring that to the vet if you already havn't gave a fecal.

well, while he was at the vet, he actually pooped there (right on the vet... haha) The vet said that his stool looked nice and healthy. He didnt run any tests on it though. He isnt really having so many bowel movements recently... I guess since hes not eating.
he acts disinterested in food, almost as if the crickets are an annoyance, he turns his head like he cant even be bothered. If he does show any interest, it quickly turns to disinterest.

Have you tried mealies or supers. If he doesn't eat those try 2 or 3 waxies. Also have you changed his tank or anything in his room multiple times? Also might want to get some Panacur and give him a little of that in a week or 2.Do you know his humidity? If he doesn't have a humid hide in his tank think of puttin one. You can find or buy some cheap tubaware containers(thinner ones)and cut a hole in the side and fill it with wet moss or paper towels. Also if he is large enough try a pinkie with the rump in calcium.

ive tried meal worms, wax worms, and crickets. He is on paper towels, the only thing that ive changed was from old paper towels to new paper towels. About two months ago, i switched from jungle earth to paper towels, but that was at the beginning of this stint. There is a humid hid in there with him. The humidity is usually around 30% or so, give or take, sometimes a little higher or lower.... i hand spray.

Try smaller supers. He could be impacted from the jungle earth. Although I don't know if he would be pooping.

yeah, i dont know if he would be pooping either, and the jungle earth was months ago. they arent supers i am using, but mealies.

leofreak Mar 02, 2004 08:36 PM

Oops! Then you should try small supers. My leos devour them and they are higher in fat than mealies but are still nutrisous(sp?)

HI

You can't tell by the naked eye if the gecko has parasites or not, just because he said the stool looked good, he let you and your gecko down by not doing a fecal test for parasites.

The medicine he gave you incase he had parasites, what if it isn't the right medication for what ever parasite he possible could have since the vet. didn't do a fecal.

Is this vet. a reptile vet. with experience under his belt?

Take Care, TLB

alieliza Mar 02, 2004 09:24 PM

Yes, he does have experience with reptiles.
I called a vet around me, and they recommended him. i was hesitant to go because it was over an hour away. He made references to many previous patients, with reptiles ranging from leopard geckos to tortoises. He had photos of reptiles up in the examination room. I trust that he has experience with reptiles.

Then as soon as he poops next time bring a fecal to him.

Well, this may sound silly but its worth a try. I've noticed my male leo seems to feed better after I've handled him that day. I think its because he gets bored or has a lack of stimulation in his environment because he's in a 10 gallon tank. Maybe you could try taking him out of the cage once a day to get a change of surroundings and then putting him back in after he gets a little exercise. I know it sounds silly but my leo really does seem to eat better after I've let him walk around on the bed a few minutes. After all I doubt it would make him any worse since he isn't eating anyway. Good luck and hope he does better!
