Shipping fees for an animal..are they neccesary?(stupid Q)

jermaine Mar 02, 2004 07:49 PM

Hello, hope this isnt too stupid of a question but I was just wondering why the shipping on most animals on kingsnakes ( or any ads) classifieds cost 70-80 dollars? I own my own business and ship with UPS on a daily basis. Now, some companies I've seen ship at a decent overnight 35 dollar fee which is fair. But some animals are like 200 dollars then the shipping fees are 70-80 dollars when the shipping fees for a 1-3 lb animal like a green tree python is 10-15 bucks some heat or cool styrofoam for another 10 bucks 25(the real price for overnight shipping) dollars for overnight shipping. Thats a good 40 dollar profit right there. I just dont see the reason why. Is it just me? There must be a reason. I ship out toys ( I own a toy company) and my end of day total is usually about 40-50 dollars. So why are my calculations a bit off?

UPS, goes by size of the box and the weight. For instance, if the box is a quarter inch over, 12 x12 x12inches, then its a minimum 15 pds. No matter what it weights.

Our boxes that are under the above number and are five pds, are about $37. If the box is a little larger, its about $67. Those are hard fact numbers I wrote lots and lots of checks for.

USPS, use to only go by weight, now they do the same size thing as well. They also were cheaper then UPS, not anymore.

If your paying $80 for a shipment and its any size box at all, then that is a good prize. FR

SHvar Mar 02, 2004 09:22 PM

UPS will charge for the maximum weight that can fit in a box not the actual weight. Many ship live animals by Delta dash only which can cost $70 . Recently I was told of a package that was shipped next day air by UPS that cost an unreal high price (around $100 or more)because of the box size, yet another company carried it back for a flat rate of $35 by 10:30am. There are some politics involved with shipping live animals by certain companies that exclusively use UPS and give them alot of business, yet UPS gives less volume companies a problem about shipping live animals etc. There is a whole series of posts on this on another forum and about a class action law suit (possible I guess) etc concerning discrimination by UPS from smaller companies that ship with them or would like to as well the UPS stores. Fedex has been listening to this industry and is changing rules as well offering earlier delivery times etc.

JPsShadow Mar 02, 2004 09:30 PM

Do you ship them overnight? next day air express service?

All you need to do is go onto any of the carriers websites. Put in your zip and a zip code to another state. Now put in the box dimensions try 12x12x12, 7x10x8 whatever you like. The be sure to only look at the prices for overnight delivery. You'll find it ranges from $30 to $60 in most cases and if your shipping a large reptile well then you'll be hit with a $80 or more bill.

It's fact not fiction and it doesn't take much research to find it out.

andrew owen Mar 03, 2004 02:09 AM

its cheaper and faster.

next year that is all i will do.

no sense in paying ups for something they don't want any way at a very high price.

i paid $116 to ship out a 20x20 box overnight.

andrew

JPsShadow Mar 03, 2004 11:55 AM

Oh yeah and delta is not always cheaper. If you ship a small box with them it is a flat rate fee and double what the other carriers will charge.

Why are you paying the shipping fee's anyways?

andrew owen Mar 03, 2004 03:15 PM

When I send out an animal of value over a 1000 I pay for shipping.

When I receive animals I prefer them delta dash, like when I buy monitors from Rare Earth, etc.

Delta is around 65 dollars right now, that is atleast most of the time much cheaper.

It is also much better.

If you had read my reply titled "my responses" below you would have read my answer about staying away.

andrew

JPsShadow Mar 03, 2004 03:43 PM

didnt realize you were selling animals worth $1,000. I have only seen you selling argus, crosses, and hm lets see a nile, and a carpet python?

Oh yeah and did you get pictures yet?? I mean since your here you may as well post them.

JT Mar 03, 2004 08:41 PM

Damn, I just can't seem to figure out these computer-thing-a-ma-jingies enough to post the pic. Oh well, I'll have them next week, or mabey the week after that, I promise -Jeff

Oscar Parsons Mar 03, 2004 11:06 PM

Stay tuned to the webpage for new pictures. I'm tempted to hide them so Andrew post them here to share them with you guys. As hard of a time as you give him.

I dunno why people insist on making monitors a competition. When is it that the monitors became a competition? I've got four monitors. None of which are from this continent. How freaking cool is that?! I've got monitors from thousands of miles away, I've got monitors that entertain me everyday.

Hell yes, sounds good to me, when I talk about my animals, I wanna hear "hey thats neat," and "wow mine does that too", or "this might solve your problem", or "hey try this." I'm tired of, your monitors DON'T do this, your monitors aren't as neat or cool or healthy or breedable as mine.

Freaking stop it. Seriously, one my mom told me, if you can't say something nice, don't say a G*D D@mned thing. Just because he doesn't have friggen daily glamour shots of his monitors posted onlne doesn't mean he doesn't have them. I've got a tristis, and an ackie, and a savannah, and another savannah. Need a picture to prove they exist? I don't. They're right here, and if you don't want to share the fact that I have these animals, and I'd like to share some information about them, or some stories, or some photos, then don't. Leave.

If a monitor crawls into a hide in my house, and I don't have a camera to take his picture before he gets inside, does he really exist?

There's a good chance it does. Grow up, try to be nice eh? If little kids on play grounds can interact decently, then why can't most of us as adults?

andrew owen Mar 04, 2004 12:21 AM

I am tempted not to have Oscar take pics at all, but I cannot do that, because when my Pilbaras breed, or Kimberlys or whatever and I hatch babies I will have to sell the excess and will need pics of the parents, that is about the only reason.

JT or Jody or whoever....

If you want to see the animals I have so badly, buy your own, or if you can't afford them ask your mom's for money.

I don't have animals for everybody elses enjoyment, I bought them out of my own wallet for my pleasure. Because when I saw them my jaw dropped. Because when I was 4 I saw a gouldi and was addicted ever since. I didn't save up money for 2 years to buy my pilbara pair for you. and I don't have them because I want expensive animals. One of my favorite animals is a 10 dollar axolotl and you will not see pics of that because I don't care to show it to you, but then again, maybe it doesn't exist, lol.

andrew

JPsShadow Mar 04, 2004 01:16 PM

I don't care if you take them or not. I only find odd that you say these things, then you say I will get pic's in 3 days, or I will answer your question in 3 days. What are you doing that it takes you so long? You are supposedly shipping out $1,000 worth of animals, and you have pil's. So why don't you have a digital camera?

But again show them or don't show them I could careless. It's funny you say your not in this for the expensive animals? That is not how you come across at all.

I have expensive animals, I have cheap ones, and alot in between. Yet most do not even know what I have or how many? HM why is that?? Yet you on the other hand post a list under your name with all of your animals. Haha It cracked me up and I took it as you trying to fit in and be a bigger dawg. But maybe thats just me and I am the only one that thinks of you in this manner.

andrew owen Mar 04, 2004 02:33 PM

Why I have my list should really be of no concern to you. It was simply to let others know what I do so that again it would be no surprise when I had babies for sale and because it lets others know what they can ask me about if I am able to answer their questions. but since you seem to follow everything I do or say, you should have noticed that it has not been under my posts, except once lately by accident.

Jody, you seem like a big bs'r. Atleast I learned not to give advice on things I don't know, you on the other hand post all day long on every aspect of monitor husbandry, perhaps you will learn like I did, I don't really care.

Part of growing up, which I have much to do is learning what you don't know. I know I don't know a lot, perhaps that is a part of education, a combination of both. I can thank the people that have given me a hard time like Frank for that, it took a long time to get through, many slaps in the face.

finally, if you are going to talk about needing pics all the time and then go ahead and spout off that you have these nice animals no one knows about, then lets see them.

andrew

ra_tzu Mar 04, 2004 03:32 PM

Hey Andrew, I wouldn't be making comments about asking peoples mommies for money.Since I've had someone that knows you personally, tell me that you have no money and that you live off your parents. Don't ask me who it is, because I won't tell you.

Well anyways, I can vouch for Jody that he has all the animals he says he has. I visit his place frequently. Hes been working with animals his whole life and its still all he does. Hes shown me pictures of him working with tigers, lions, wolves, monkeys, gators etc. etc ,in some of the pictures hes just a kid. So take the advice he gives for what it is, not just someone "giving advice", theres a difference. Question him, if you know better.

ra_tzu Mar 04, 2004 03:39 PM

lets see some pics. Hell, If I was you and running varanus creations, I would've taken those snapshots and posted them a long, long time ago, at least to give myself some credibility.

andrew owen Mar 04, 2004 11:38 PM

that is hilarious ratzu.

my parents have not given me a damn thing.

i work for a living, pay for my education and my own monitors.

and as far as your earlier accusation of buying things on credit, that is also false. the only thing I have boughten off of a loan was the kimberlys and the finschi from a school rebate check.

you really do crack me up and your "source"

ra_tzu Mar 05, 2004 12:17 AM

OK, sure.... whatever you say

JPsShadow Mar 04, 2004 04:14 PM

What of the 100 animals would you like to see?

There are some pics on my site, along with many on the photo gallery, and many on here, and the other sites.

But guess you must of missed them. So you tell me would you like pics of snakes, monitors, others?? The babies hatching? what ya want and I will go take some pics cause I can do that.

haha I am not concerned with you at all your nothing for me to worry about. But I on the other hand must bother you. I ask for one thing and you come on here having a fit.

Oh and if I don't know the answer to something I do not respond, I happen to respond alot because I know alot. Does that bother you? I am sorry but I have worked hard to know all I do in such a short time, and I enjoy educating others.

Maybe one day you'll know something and can answer questions too.

JT Mar 04, 2004 03:05 PM

You must not have been paying attention, because that has nothing to do with my comment at all. And if you say you monitors are breeding, laying eggs, have a website specifically for that, hell yes, you need proof. It has nothing to do with how cool any monitor is. It only has to do with this. If someone talks about this and that monitor or monitors they own, and that these monitors are breeding all the time, and finding clutches. But then saying they are going to get pics this week, next, the next etc... and never showing any. This all coming from a person that was already checked for saying he hatched this and that, with no proof. No competition, just getting tired of the b.s. and want to see some actual proof. I said my Griesus were mating, and snapped some crappy pics, crappy, but proof pics none the less with a polaroid. If anyone has anything to do with competition, it's him. Commenting all the time that this and that are breeding, taking deposits on something that wasn't already and never did hatch, comments like "we'll see in 20 years", announcing getting some pills every other day a week before getting them, saying they are his favorites hands down after owning them for less than 2 days, claiming they were breeding with no pics, basically the list goes on and on. This is they only person who seems to be in some sort of competition. Do you not see what everyone else sees???? Dude, it's pretty clear. As an adult, I have learned to back up what I say, is that so hard? Nobody asks for daily shots, what't that about??? Just one or two pics of events he claims on a daily basis. Why do you have to associate this to acting like kids? I would say backing up what you claim is an adult thing, wouldn't you?? Good luck. -Jeff

Oscar Parsons Mar 04, 2004 04:34 PM

If they send me more than one or two pictures it blocks up my mail box and I get really pissy if I can't get any email.

So I have to be ready for pix, and strangely enough we're very busy people.

I really think the pissing match should stop. Seriously, now we're taking shots at how he makes his living? Wow, we should all get confidants, and tell secrets. Yes behaving like children is how I tend to see it. Its playground smack talk.

I saw some pix of JP's BRN's I beleive. BTW, having hundred of animals doesn't really impress me. Its not really all that hard to 'horde' that many. Hey did you know there's actually a clinical sickness that is characterized by hording animals? Interesting no?

I'm glad you managed to assimilate and reply to my post, too bad you didn't heed any of it. I'm sure he knows things, and I'm sure you know things too. Once again you fall back to an.. "I'm better than you argument." So for some reason you feel the need to be superior. Does it really rile you that much that he exists? Seriously.

This is part of the reason I stopped posting my pictures. Too much critique and not enough support. Seriously thats what forums are supposed to be for, to help the community, communicate, and help support itself. What is it that we're doing here? We're breaking down open honest communication, and help, and people get their feelings hurt, feel bad, get angry, get stressed, and just don't feel like contributing anymore.

I know, because I sure don't really feel like contributing much,.. especially picture wise. You can't say anything without a certain group of individuals telling you you're wrong, or making fun of you, or not beleiving you, or just generally berating you. That sucks. I seriously doubt it'll change either. Try going to a well functioning, supportive forum, its alot better. I'm a member of a forum, that just lost two of its members. They DIED, how do you suppose this forum would react if one of its members died? I HONESTLY beleive that there would be some happy people depending on who it was. What the hell is up with that? Life is too short to get that up in arms over some 'discussion'.

I'm sorry but I've worked hard to know all I do in such a short time, and I enjoy educating others.

Maybe one day you'll learn something, and you can start to be nice to others.

O

JPsShadow Mar 04, 2004 04:49 PM

wow tiny you got some nerve.

First of all who is the one being nice and the one not calling names?

I asked for pics, you both come out in defensive mode. Much like I asked Sam a question below and you come out flapping your jaw.

I am now Mr. Know it all, a bser, I need my moommy, an animal horder, with a sickness, and um what else have you guy's called me??

G who is the one doing name calling, and being the not nice person?? maybe you should look in the mirror.

Talk about hypocrits. You want it to stop being a pissing contest but yet you throw mud? You say one thing and yet do another. I guess it is only OK for you to do though and not for us.

Oscar Parsons Mar 04, 2004 04:53 PM

I wasn't saying you had the sickness, I was just saying there was one. I'm sorry if I have done that, I really am trying not to do that. Seriously. I take back all the stuff that could be interpreted as a personal insult. Honestly I don't wanna start anything. I just want it to be more fun here, instead of less fun.

JT Mar 04, 2004 07:26 PM

Where are you getting the "better than you" part in any of my response???? I have never claimed or infered to be be better than anyone. I have never claimed anything that I can't back up with proof. All I ask for is proof of claims. It that so bad?? If someone is spouting this and that all day, but doesn't show anythign of it, eventually everyone takes it as b.s.. "Rile me so much that he exists", what the hell are you talking about???? Again, you have lost me. I only want proof to back up claims that are made over and over again. Again, is that about being better than someone, to show proof???? "Maybe one day you'll learn something, and you can start to be nice to others." What the hell does this have to do with anything????????????????? You keep talking about your mommy telling you this and that, and trying to belittle me with these crazy comments. Anyone that knows me, deffinatly knows I'm a nice guy. You on the other hand don't know me and have never met me. So where in the world would you get that from????? Must be another of those "my mommy told me..." type deals again. Keep it real homie. -Jeff

andrew owen Mar 04, 2004 12:13 AM

that you did not know what a Pilbara looked like. well, next week you will see a couple.

that would be nice to see your lacies, oh thats right, you don't have any.

JT Mar 04, 2004 03:13 PM

They are breeding right now. Heck, I can see her getting fat right in front of my eyes. I guess I should take some deposits now, huh? Pics later this week, or the next, or the week after. Gotta get back to my glebos now. Oh yeah, everybody, I'm going to take a forum break now to concentrate on all my species. See you in a few months. -Jeff

flavicross Mar 04, 2004 03:52 PM

See you then buddy I hope you have the best of successes, but if you start to see that youre not breeding any animals dont go off and start selling some of the species on KS ha ha ha ha . Why buy them in the first place if you do not plan to keep them right? I know you wouldnt do that with your lacies ha ha ha ha it was sarcasm.

LOL I hope to see some pics of those lacies in the coming weeks some day i hope to have a pair, but for now I have to keep my wallet with the gouldii complex

later bud

Oscar Parsons Mar 04, 2004 04:42 PM

Seriously you had nothing nice to say at all. Its just plain rude. I guess if thats how you'd like to present yourself. I didn't really find it amusing. But hey if its self gratifying. Feel free to self gratify yourself all over the place.

However it appears you've already done that here. Hey btw, do you have any animals? If you do have anything, please share it'll be fun if we get a nice community started here. I'd be happy to host some pictures for you if you'd like or even a bit of a gallery. So far all I've seen from your posts is commentary. Just feel free to email me.

Oscar

flavicross Mar 04, 2004 06:59 PM

This is not sesame street and I have the right to say what I want when I want. Some of us feel that others on this forum come in and talk alot of B.S. It is not that I take self gratification on posting sarcasm the reason why I post this sarcasm is because your buddy slams on people like jody and jt asking them to post what they have and so on without knowing ..if you dont believe me look up a couple of posts. So I saracastically wrote this post because I feel he attacked Jt in an unfair way by stating he did not have any lacies. I believe he does and because he cant post any pics of them makes him a liar? ha ha ha ha funny. Your buddy posts stuff about pills being gravid and so on and so forth. Other people want to see because they are curious of the event because we all want to share knowledge of this husbandry, but he seems to not be able to share the experience with pictures. So thats where people think its BS why even talk about it if he cant share it you know? FR does and its a pleasure to hear the story behind the pic not just the story. Maybe some of us are visual seekers and we like to share our pics with others to go along with the knowledge ? No harm in that?

Hey btw, do you have any animals?

Yea I do have some animals maybe not as many as the fabulous Varanus creations but I got 3 flavi argus crosses from Frank a pure goulds from frank and a pair of bearded dragons from dragons den herp.

If you do have anything, please share it'll be fun if we get a nice community started here. I'd be happy to host some pictures for you if you'd like or even a bit of a gallery. So far all I've seen from your posts is commentary. Just feel free to email me.

Ill pass on you hosting my animals, but you see I dont go out I dont have anyone asking me for pics because I havent said anything resulting in requests for pics.....hmmmm thats because I dont talk about this being gravid and mating between so and so....

Youre right all you do see is commentary because there is no "rate my monitor contest" on this thread so it does not constitute me putting pictures of my animals for no reason. But if you want ill put some clipart for you because nothing I have said has called for me to post a picture. Other reason why I have not posted pics ....i havent gotten to learning how to post pics but when I do ill post some pics just for you ok bud.

ill pass on the email too I only email people I agree with and enjoy talking to

here is a pic for you to enjoy

Oscar Parsons Mar 04, 2004 07:07 PM

Sorry for the misunderstanding, however my offers are open to everyone in the forum, also, I knew you had animals Good luck with them Have fun.

O

flavicross Mar 04, 2004 08:29 PM

Ok likewise

JT Mar 04, 2004 07:32 PM

Varanus.net. Scroll down a little ways for Jeff T and you can see the 3 species I keep. Just refresh screen if pics come up as red x. Enjoy. -Jeff

andrew owen Mar 04, 2004 11:55 PM

Ok, seriously, this is all getting old and I admit my big share in all of this.

I don't want to bicker, or anything else. I want my monitor keeping to be fun, and yours as well.
I think I have gotten way off track here with the games we have been shooting back and forth.

We all have nice monitors, we enjoy keeping them, end of story. I do not have proof of my pils breeding, unless of course she lays soon. So you will see pics of a pil pair, sometime, who knows when, haha. I suck at technology and have never claimed anything but.

There are many areas I have failed in and showing proof through pics is definitely one of them. About my deposits on the kimberlys that did not hatch, again, my bad and I think I learned from it. Others were doing it (Rare Earth, others) but I am not them in so many ways.

I am not doing this for a living, if my animals produce and I get some of the money back that will be nice, but for now I am lilving the dream that I couldn't have when I was a kid, keeping monitors.

So, again, I am sorry for being an arse. I too am a nice guy, willing to give much of myself for others and haven't acted that way here at all.

I hope we can erase the chalk board a bit here.

Delta dash is the way to go, I lost an ackie in receiving via
ups, due to heat pack failure. I decided to buy one from Joe Lewis who ships delta dash, When I open the box at the airport, It was warm and my Ackie was lively. For me, I feel its worth the extra expense. I also received an ackie alive via ups, the little guy was very cold, but has done very well since. At certain times of the year I would not purchase a herp unless they shipped Delta Dash. Just my opinion. So what is that, a pair of Ackies, and I also purchased a Argus localy. I don't have a digi. cam. but their here somewhere, I think, maybe!!! I hope you post your pils. Andrew, just for the eye candy. You know, if someone really wanted to know i suppose they could e-mail Joe. Later,Clint

tc5000 Mar 03, 2004 05:50 AM

Don’t forget good box, insulation, packing and heat packs that will last the duration of the shipment. Those items alone could add $10 easlie. It all adds up. I personally would spare no expense if I had to ship an animal however I would travel to pick up an animal rather then ship them.
