How to palpate ovulating Kingsnake ...

Passport Mar 02, 2004 08:23 PM

My two Kings bred twice on the weekend. I tried before placing her with the male to feel for developing folicles but was unable to feel anything. I really didn't know what to "feel for". If she allowed breeding is that a sure sign that she is ovulating? Does breeding always produce eggs?

Palpating is if you dont know if an animal is ovulating. This can just as easily be seen by introducing her to a undersexed male....her pheromones will drive him crazy and he will attempt to mate.IF he doesnt....that is when you check for ovulation.Sometimes a first "breeding" induces ovulation,so make sure you continue to introduce her a couple times a week for at least a couple weeks to insure good fertility.
No,they dont always lay eggs after sex.....I have seen more than a few snakes sneak a totally unproductive moment at other times of the year.Alot depends on the subspecies for this.If the signs are there you should see ovulation around the time of the 2nd post brumation shed.Dont mistake this for EGGS and not introduce her to the male!! Keep seperating them and reintroducing as you dont want the male to tire of her! Jeff
