I love answering this question... I assist in educational programs with children and reptiles, and their parents are always asking... Hehehe, a herp for every kid!! My thoughts-
Lizards-
Leapard geckos
Bearded Dragons
Uromastyx
Snakes-
All kinfs of north american colubrids, like garters, rats, corns, kings and milks (house seperate)
Yeah, probably more than a little bias in there. But, except the uros, all these are animals i work with. Oh, there's more, but these are what i typically suggest. NO BURMESE PYTHONS!!! That's always the parting warning..
Oh, centralpets.com has lots of good caresheets...
scales put most of the best ones down but i would stay away from the uros as beginners sometimes have a hard time keeping them.other wise the rest of them are good to keep.also one more snake to reccomend isthe african house snake.their is a good care sheet for them in the kingsnake.com caresheet section.also another lizard to suggest is the crested gecko.

The best family lizard(only have expierence with lizards) is the Bearded Dragon(for daytime playing and more interactive)or Leopard Gecko(they have smaller required tanks but nocturnal and very slow if thats a bad thing)
