Red Ear Slider and Mississippi Map

bill1125 Mar 02, 2004 09:16 PM

Hi,

I've raise my turtles for two years now and they are huge. I feed the Red Ear Slider goldfish, but the Miss. Map wont eat any. They will both eat crickets though. I also feed them fish flakes, bloodworms, and turtle delight on occasion. They seem to be doing well. They are in a 75 gallon tank, it seems big enough, but a third would be too much?

Mississippi maps are wonderful turtles. And we all loved red eared sliders : )
I do have to say in answer to your quwestion:
No.
A 75 gallon is not enough space for three maps and certainly not for a map and two red ears. If the red ear turns out to be female its not even enough room for her by herself.
You should really consider not using goldfish. There are many health risks to your animals with them from high levels of fat to parasites to chemicals in their bodies absorbed from water tratments on the farms in which they are raised. All can harm your turtles.
Try more insects and cooked fish. Be sure to add some WATER PLANTS soon as the adult RES has a diet that is largely plant based. Too much animal food will result in many problems and early death. You may try anacharis, water lettuce, water hyacinth, hornwort, moneywort and also fruits like canteloupe, honeydew melon, apple, and pear. Some RES will eat squash and carrot as well as green leafy plants like dandelion greens, collard greens and escarole.
Try to aim for slow steady growth rather than rapid growth.

I have one map and one slider in the 75 gallon. It seems like enough space. They seem happy, and always hungry. Any thoughts?

always hungry sounds normal to me.
Try to add water plants and green leafy veggies and fruit to the diet and don't feed every day.
Be carefu to check that the slider doesn't bully the map.
Plan on a bigger tank when the slider is full grown.

The slider is bigger than the map, but the map holds its own. Bigger, they can't get much bigger I think.

well a female miss can go to 10 inches
and a female red ear can break a foot in length.
I say a 125 would be a decent minimum.
Do you lkive in warm place? Could you build a pond?
