Heat question

MontyPython03 Jun 10, 2003 02:08 PM

Okay, so i just got a BP yesterday, got all the supplies too. I hooked up the under tank heater and i guess it's fully heated by now, but the temp gauge only showed a little less than 80 degrees. So i added a light to the top of the cage which pushed the temp up to 85. Is this heat okay? The cage is in a pretty good sized room which may take a while to heat up fully, would moving the cage to a smaller room create better heat? Also how does one go about misting the cage? Right now my humidity is at 60 degrees. Thanks for any help, this is my first ball and i want to keep it happy as much as possible! Thanks!

Brian

Where's your temp gauge placed? This could make ALL the difference.

It's placed above where the under tank heater is. I've tried moving the light around to get a higher temp, but it doesn't seem to be working... Thanks

I would invest in an infra red temp gun (radidio shack $40 or something like that) you can spot check the ground in several spots and get a better idea what is going on. if you are using one of the stick on thermometers you are reading ambient air temp and radiant heat temp (heat rays from the light) and may not be getting an accurate reading. Also just a word to the wise, a heat lamp or an incondesent light can really play havoc on your humidity levels. One more word to the wise, an incondesent light above 40 watts can possibly cause blind spots in your herps vision (the whole stairing at the sun thing).
