getting my leo a buddy???

lizzylizard Mar 03, 2004 02:25 AM

For the last four years I was sure my leo was a male. After a recent vet trip we found out otherwise and HER name has now changed from Rex to Rexy. I always wanted to get "him" a buddy but didn't want babies, and I know that males don't get along. I would really like to get another female but after four years? is it to late? will she be to territorial? any info would be helpful

Also if I do get another female I would like her to be the same size, full grown. I only ever see babies in pet stores and also really don't want to purchase from a pet store.

It’s really hard to tell if she will be territorial without another female gecko to test. I’ve had some girls who get along great with me, but bad with other leos, and vice versa. There is a good chance that your female will be tolerant of another female.

The first place I’d check is with the sponsors of this forum, for an adult female. Email them if they do not have what you are looking for. It’s really worth waiting for a healthy gecko from a reputable breeder rather than buying any leo from a pet store. I’d urge you to be patient and wait for the female that you think is right. I hope you can find a good friend for your Rexy!

Thanks for your reply. Wouldn't it be faily traumatizing for the gecko to come in the mail? Plus I live in Canada, I think they are all in the US.

Nope I have received most of my leos in the mail, and I don’t think it causes undue stress to healthy geckos. There are a few breeders in Canada; it would be a good idea to contact them.

Even if your leo comes from the states, I wouldn’t worry much about it, as long as it is a reputable breeder who feels confident shipping to Canada. Best of luck,

Have you tried going to Kingsnake Canada? If not click on it at the top of the page, or go to www.kingsnake.ca/. It has a much shorter list of breeders, But I am pretty sure that means those breeders are either in Canada or licensed to ship live animals to Canada.

As for the leo's stress, it should be okay, as long as it is sent via Overnight mail. Out of all of the leos that we have shipped, there has only been one who got truly stressed out - a Baby, and it dropped its tail in transit. Other than that, the others handled it well - as long as they are given time to relax and de-stress after shipping.

I was kind of surprised that you hadn't known what sex it what. Heh most of males are rather.. umm.. EASY to tell the gender...

Good Luck!

If your in Ontario and close to Toronto, you might want to wait for the April Toronto Reptile Expo. Here are the URLs for two breeders sites....it is the links page of each breeder. Not only do these breeders have amazing animals but so do the people they are linked to

I bought my 1.5 group from Tarzets and i'm buying three more females from them this week

http://www.painteddesertgeckos.com/links.html

As for introducing another female.....First quarentine the new gecko for 3 months in a separate tank away from your current one. Once that is done, the way i did it was to set up a totally new tank for my girls (there are 5 of them so i set up a 40 gal tank) making sure to add all new hides (or you can wash them very well). This means that both geckos are going into a new environment and will not have set up any territories. Everything will be new to the geckos. Also you can just wash and rearrange one tank so that the female you have now thinks its all new.

I enjoy watching the interaction between my girls but i'll admit, there have been a few disagreements between them. Dot, my hypo is very bullish and if she wants into a hide where someone else is she'll push them out. Keep a close eye on them and if theres any agressiveness separate them
I hope that helped

Why quarentine them for 3 months? in case they are sick?

Lisa

RedQuake Mar 03, 2004 11:08 PM

Yes, even when buying geckos from breeders theres always a possibility that they could be carrying something. Its better to be safe than sorry as illnesses might not show in an animal right away. Many people suggest putting new arrivals into a different room away from the ones you have. I kept all my females apart for approx. 3 months then i put them together. It also helps determine if they are eating well and settled in before introducing them to other geckos.
