WOULD A MONITOR BE ABLE TO ESCAPE THIS???

cv768 Mar 03, 2004 07:58 AM

We've got a box...6' long...3.5' wide.......18" tall....

We hope to put a savannah in it...in previous years it has houses bearded dragons so there was no need for a lid as they couldn't climb out...would a savannah be able to climb out of 18" high and if so what would be the hieght of the sides so they couldn't get out???

Or is necessary to put a lid on the box???

Thanks.

It would climb out the minute you put it in that box. Monitors will seek out every possible route of escape and use them too. Captive monitors #1 mission in life besides eating is escaping.

So...lid it is???

Or is it possible to make the box tall enough to prevent escape??? if so, how tall should the sides be?

If you make the sides say 3 or 4 foot high then slant them at an incline. The savanna when climbing cannot get over verticle to escape. Also if you want put a slippery surface at the top portion, tin, some other metal sheet, or maybe a slick wall paneling.

But in doing this you may find there is to much ventalation. If this occurs you'll need to cover the top. I am in FL. and have no troubles with humidity, it is always humid here.

In the past, I have had a large adult savanna climb over a barrier approximately 2 feet high. A 3 to 4 foot barrier, however, successfully kept all savanna monitors out of the no-monitor part of my apartment for over a year. Savannas seem to be particularly ground hugging, though, as Niles and argus monitors would scale the taller barrier on occasion.
