climbing uros?

shelley7950 Mar 03, 2004 10:43 AM

I just read the thread lower down on climbing and uromastyx.

There is a website (UroNature, accessible through the Uromastyx Homepage) that has studied ornate uromastyx in the wild in Israel. According to their information, wild ornates spend most of the day well up in the twiggy branches of shrubs, eating leaves and flowers and basking. There are several photos of uros climbing around in bushes; they also have a semi-prehensile tail to aid them in their climbing...These are fairly low bushes and the lizards aren't usually further up than 3-5', but they apparently definitely do climb and in fact get the majority of their food from these bushes. This study applies only to ornates; I think the other species are probably more terrestrial.

I added a twiggy branch to my ornate's tank, and she loves it and does, in fact, spend a lot of her time climbing through and around the branches...Other people with ornates might want to consider this as a form of enrichment...

Interesting! I tried a piece of manzanita in my uro's cage (Saharan) and it went totally ignored. She likes logs and rock piles, though.

They can (At Least Mali's) if given the climbing surfaces. They can also push off lids if not secure. Heed this warning.

Sincerely,
