Horse Pellets for Rats & Mice?

frostfire Mar 03, 2004 11:09 AM

Is it possible to feed horse pellets to mice and rats? If so does anyone have a specific brand that they use and do you have the nutritional breakdown? Pellets only please. My racks have 1/4 inch feed holders. Thanks!

If you are talking about the horse pellets that are mainly alfalfa your rats probably won't eat them. Most rats don't like it. If you are looking for a main food source you want something with more protein anyway. Cheap dog food and rodent lab blocks are what most people use. Some people supplement with small amounts of Omelene which is a mix of grain and molassas for pregnant horses.

maybe for mice, but rats need animal protiene (sp?). If you were to breed them and keep them strictly on horse pellets then you would probably get a high rate of cannabilisim. Even if you supplemented with ham or chicken once a week. For rats get a cheap dog food, I use ol'roy bites and bones (wal-mart brand) it lasts long, and I get litters of anywhere from 10-14 every time.
