schnieder skink breeding question

x_starwarsgirl Mar 03, 2004 11:18 AM

I was holding my schneider skink Anakin and he leaked a white substance onto my hand. He does have a tendency to musk if being held, but this was white and did not smell. I know other lizard species release seminal plugs during a breeding season, is that natural for schneiders as well? Also while I was away my brother fed him this vegetables and he said that he would eat some, roll onto his back and wiggle, eat some more and roll onto his back and wiggle and then he dragged his butt across the cage. I was not there when this happened but is this just a form of behaviour, is it possible he had an itch? Or should I be worried about this? Anakin is known for acting up and doing weird things, but he has never rolled onto his back before!

It's possible that maybe the skink was trying to remove some old shed, in an odd way. What vegetables were fed? I don't feed veggies to my Schneiders, and they're doing great. They are primarily insectivorous, with vegetables possibly providing a bit of needed nutrition through the winter if food is sparce. Saying that, my 3 have never touched vegetables or fruits while i've had them.

As for the question regarding seminal plugs, i've never witnessed it in mine, or heard anything about it from others. I have two male;s, both in seperate areas, both ready for breeding. I have found small white, aquarium-gravel shaped things in the vivarium, but i'm assuming these are nothing more than excreted water. I can have a look into it for you though. I check my vivs daily for anything out of the ordinary, so now I have something new to look for.

Good luck if you ever decide to breed your skink. Do you know what sex it is? If you don't and can post a picture from above the skink, I should be able to help.

anakin is a male. he mostly eats meal worms but gets spinach, alfalfa sprouts and muched carrots on occasion. those white things you described are what anakin had and they appear to be seminal plugs, i checked this one site for them. excess water is usually yellowish in clour not pure white. anakin has never been bred and never will be, he was very sick when i got him and am very protective over him, i wouldn't trust him to bread. thanx for the advise!

I'd get him eating locusts. Large hoppers (about 3.5-5cm long) are perfect size, and also offer a lot more exercise with hunting and chasing. Also, I wouldn't give spinach at all. I know it isn't good for BTS's so i'm guessing the same applies here. As said, i've never fed any of my 3 Schneiders on vegetation.
