Blood from mating

marcantony Mar 03, 2004 12:05 PM

I am trying my first attempt at breeding dragons this year. After brumating the male and female (in seperate cages), I placed them together. I haven't noticed any real breeding behavior as described in my reference books. What I did notice checking on them last evening was a reddish liquid (possibly blood?)around the vents on both the male and female. I soaked them both, and after being cleaned up, I couldn't find any external sign of trauma on either one. Is this something that anyone else has ever run into when breeding virgin males with virgin females. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

It happens. I would say, if you saw blood, they've bred.

If it is blood, it is more than likely from the males' hemipenis getting punctured by a scale or claw, nothing serious, it shouldn't hurt either one. I have had it happen before with males that are in their first year of breeding.
